FACILITIES AT GLION INSTITUTE OF HIGHER EDUCATION

Canton of Vaud

Glion Institute of Higher Education (GIHE) is a sister school of LRG.  GIHE is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC) in the USA and is not part of the federally authorised University of Applied Sciences. Students who have chosen the specialisation in International Hospitality Management will spend one semester on the Glion campus of GIHE for their non degree preparatory semester.

ACCOMMODATION

The Glion Campus of GIHE* offers a wide range of accommodation throughout the Glion village. Standard double rooms, included in the fees, offer each student adequate closet space, a comfortable bed, desk, safe-deposit box, poster-board, a night-stand table and a wash basin in the room as well as a small cabinet for each student. The shower and bathroom facilities are located across the hallway. Additional closet space is available in locked closets just next to the door of each room and students can rent boxes for bulky items if necessary.

Special accommodations are available for an additional fee and include single rooms with, or without, a bathroom in the room.

To assist students with the maintenance of their rooms, cleaning staff regularly come to vacuum and clean the bathrooms, and change the bed linens once a week. Bed linens, pillows, and comforters (duvets) are provided by the school but towels and bath mats are not and therefore students need to bring their own.

The buildings also have laundry facilities, and each room has an ironing board. Kettles, refrigerators, and TV sets are allowed in the rooms.

*GIHE, our sister school, is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC) in the USA. It is not part of the federally authorised UAS but the preparatory program is given on the Glion campus of this institution.

DINING

Students receive full board at the school which includes three meals a day Monday through Friday and two meals per day during the weekend (brunch/lunch and dinner). There are five dining options to choose from. Sign-up sheets and reservations for evening meals are mandatory.

Café Viennois and Restaurant Bellevue: These free-flow style restaurants are located in the main campus and offer a quick and easy meal for busy students, guests and teachers. The menu each day has a steamed, vegetarian or standard option with salad and dessert buffets. Students can order coffee or special drinks from the counter for reasonable prices.

La Résidence: In the quaint village of Glion, Postgraduate students are running the Residence restaurant which offers an “à la carte” type of menu for a three-course dinner meal in a themed ambiance. Students eat for free, and guests can dine for only CHF. 15.-, but wine and beverages are charged at reasonable prices.

Hôtel des Alpes: This newly renovated, fine-dining style restaurant is located in the Hôtel des Alpes in the Glion village. Students can reserve a table for a three-course lunch meal. The menu changes every two days for a variety of tastes. In the evening, third semester students serve a special meal, cocktails and desserts. The same prices as the Residence apply.

The Club: Located in the middle of the campus, the Club is a modern sports-bar style café where students can order from a daily selection of sandwiches, salads, and pizzas which are included in the students’ meal plan. Drinks and easy meals are also available after class at a reasonable price.

In addition to the campus restaurants, students have the choice of other fine-dining or casual, private establishments throughout Glion and Montreux.

PUBLIC TRANSPORT

Public transportation is easy to access with the funicular station, bus stops, and taxis available for reasonable prices, as well as a free shuttle for students who live in the Glion village. Parking is extremely limited, hence we do not encourage students to come with their own car as they might not always find a parking spot.

ACADEMIC LEARNING FACILITIES

Classrooms: Glion students benefit from the newly renovated Academic building where classrooms have been refreshed to create comfortable study spaces, well lighted rooms with opening windows. The campus counts:

  • 16 Classrooms
  • 1 Auditorium
  • 1 Cyberspace room with computers and internet access
  • 2 Computer laboratory rooms

The campus is equipped with wireless internet throughout. All learning facilities have state-of-the art equipment, including computer projectors, color printing, scanning or copying, audio visual devices and digital cameras.

The library proposes a selection of books on a wide range of topics, which are relevant to the student learning process. For general education and personal interest, there are a variety of novels, dictionaries, newspapers, magazines and journals. In addition to the on-site library, students receive an access name and password for specific electronic databases, which provide over 15,000 online publications, as well as the Britannica Encyclopedia.
A professional librarian is at disposal to help in the search for books and information. The library has Internet connection, three computers, a printer, and a scanner. Interlibrary loan is possible between Glion and Bulle, as well as with the Swiss Universities Libraries.

CRAFT-BASED LEARNING (CBL) FACILITIES

Food Service CBL: as part of the craft-based learning courses, students serve all three daily meals to staff, visitors, and their fellow students. In the four restaurants, students get an overview of a variety of different service techniques, from the fine-dining restaurant, where classical service techniques are used, to our fast and efficient cafés where a more contemporary service style is needed.

The restaurants are also the site for beverage preparation and service classrooms where tea, coffee, wine and full-bar service is demonstrated and practiced so that students feel comfortable in a variety of restaurant positions. Cleaning science practical work takes place in the kitchen and teaches students the proper sanitation methods for food-service materials and the operation methods for modern sanitation devices.

Culinary CBL: supervised by industry professionals, students get highly involved in the kitchen. Culinary concepts will be introduced, covering all the major food groups, international cuisine, and food preparation, methods for pastry, meat and poultry, soups, salads, vegetables and desserts.

Culinary concepts are introduced in the Demonstration Kitchen where students begin the three-step culinary learning process. From there, they go on to practice in the various restaurant facilities.

Rooms Division CBL: The rooms-division operations are composed of real-life housekeeping practice as students follow the cleaning staff on their daily rounds to ensure the cleanliness and order in the dorm rooms. It also includes running the student reception and assist other students with front-office issues such as making calls, getting taxis, arranging trips, signaling maintenance problems and supporting the Student Affairs Department.
