During the past and present academic year, three main collaboration initiatives were carried out in order to build-up relationships with the Swiss Universities of Applied Sciences (HES-SO), European Universities of Applied Sciences and with the Industry.

Collaboration with HES-Fribourg
Initial collaboration with two HES-SO institutions has taken place since the end of semester 2008.1. At present, collaboration with these academic institutions is framed on the project called “Développement Durable”. The aim of the project is to construct eco-environmental building with the assistance of all competences of all the HES institutions.

On February 19th 2009, LRG-UAS participated in the “Développement Durable” convention organized by la direction générale de la HES-SO. The event took place at the Haute Ecole fribourgeoise de travail social (HEF-TS) Fribourg.  LRG-UAS was represented by Dr. Prince, Dr. Jenkins and Dr. Rios-Morales.

Collaboration with EuroCHRIE - Swiss Chapter

On March 27th, 25 academic researchers attended the Swiss Eurochrie event hosted at the Ecole Hoteliere de Lausanne. The event was organised by Dr. Hilary Murphy (Professor at EHL). The main emphasis for the meeting was to establish collaboration and sharing research ideas and initiatives. John Swarbrooke, recently appointed Director of Research at Cesar Ritz colleges, led the discussion on collaboration, reflecting on schools of thought in academic research and approaches to funding. At this gathering, there were four academic papers presented. LRG- University of Applied Sciences was represented by Ruth Rios-Morales from Bulle presented her research on “Sovereign Wealth Funds - The New Global Financial Players”.

In view of the success of the EuroCHRIE event in March, a follow-up event entitled  “First Steps in Research: A Workshop for New and Aspiring Researchers” will be hosted by the University Center “César Ritz” in Brig on Friday 2nd October 2009. The workshop facilitators will include experienced and active researchers from EuroCHRIE member schools, and there will be plenty of opportunity for networking and informal discussions. At this one day event LRG will be represented by Dr Ian Jenkins who will give a presentation on making bids for funded projects and Henri Kuokkanen will present a paper entitled “Conceptual Design of a Financial Approach to Developing Competitive Advantage through Responsible Tourism”.

Collaboration with the Industry

Fostering collaboration with the industry is one of the main objectives of LRG. In 2009, the our university initiated three interesting projects.

Madarin Oriental

Robert Lewis, lecturer and researcher at LRG, Bluche campus is piloting this collaboration project with a Geneva-based luxury hotel. The entry point for this project was the head of human resources, with the support of the general manager and the efforts of Robert Lewis.
Employee perceptions of work-life balance in a Geneva-based luxury hotel
The objective of this research collaboration is twofold.  Firstly, this study aims to bring to light work-life balance issues from the perspective of employees in a Geneva-based luxury hotel.  Second, this study provides results that can be used for the hotel’s human resources policy and potentially useful in similar organisations.  This study argues that hospitality organisations can attract and retain high quality staff by measuring work-life balance implications for employees within context.  Work-life balance, for the purpose of this study, refers to the relationship between work- and non-work life.

Kempinski

Peter Juskiw piloted a collaboration project with the Kempinski Group in Geneva, offering MBA /MEd students the opportunity to conduct three applied research projects (ARPs). Students supervised by Mr Juskiw and Dr Jenkins collected primary data using the survey method of research.

The ARPs were conducted in the area of HR, focusing particularly on the topics of loyalty, leadership and emerging markets. The ARP in emerging markets gave the opportunity to our students to travel to Tanzania to gather data.

The ARP exercise has given our MBA/MEd students with the opportunity to feel the culture of one major Hotel company. and the environment in the industry. It also provided them with practical experience of writing a business report and presenting their research to the Kempinski senior managerial team.

ARJO

This project represents collaboration between ARJO group, a market leader in lifting equipment and LRG-UAS. Based on their recognised role in the market for support equipment for obese and ageing people, ARJO will assist our Master’s students conducting an applied research project with the development of client profiles, provide lifting equipment for tests and discussions with hospitality clients and support implementation concepts.

Dr Tom Guthknecht, proportional lecturer at Bulle campus, has piloted this collaborative project with ARJO. Two students, Nuno Rodigues Dos Santos (MBA) and Alice Abok (MEd) are working on this project under the supervision of Dr Guthknecht. The project focuses on the profiling of the changing hospitality clientele with special regard to the following three factors: [1] Ageing society, [2] Increasing work life age, [3] Obesity. The catchment-area for this project are hospitality businesses around the Lac Leman. This will lead to the identification of additional or newly introduced lifting equipment to lift up clients in situations where they are unable to help themselves.
