COMPUTER POLICY

BULLE & GIHE* CAMPUSES LAPTOP POLICY

The following policy is applicable to students enrolled on the following programme:

  • BSc in Hospitality Management with a specialisation in International Hospitality Management

 

LRG University of Applied Sciences offers computing facilities for teaching and learning in specially equipped laboratories. Besides these facilities, students can either use the university’s shared access computers and need a personal laptop to access to the intranet Web site which hosts Email accounts, the Student Support Centre, documents and other learning resources on the internet.

Regarding the personal laptop, a choice of two options is available to meet our requirements :

  1. Students may bring their own laptop but it MUST meet the university’s specifications.
  2. Students may purchase their personal laptop through a Website jointly developed with the supplier of LRG. This site provides a range of 3 different models going from basic to the most sophisticated equipment, reflecting the latest trends of the market.

On arrival and regardless of the option chosen, students will be charged CHF. 150.- for the network connection setup fee (one time charge for the whole studies).

*GIHE, our sister school, is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC) in the USA. It is not part of the federally authorised UAS but the preparatory program is given on the Glion campus of this institution.

 

1. STUDENTS BRING THEIR OWN LAPTOP

 

Technical specifications (2008-02) the computers have to meet :

  • Windows Vista Home, business or Ultimate Operating System in French or English ONLY
    - or -
  • Windows XP Home or Professional Operating System in French or English ONLY.
  • No Dual Boot – Only ONE Operating System i.e. XP / Vista.
  • Microsoft Office 2007, including Access.
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer Version 6.0 or higher / Mozilla Firefox 2 or higher.
  • Minimum hardware requirements : 1.6GHz processor, 2Gb RAM, 40Gb available on hard drive, CD/DVD player.
  • Network connectivity : Ethernet connector and WiFi (wireless card, WPA2 mandatory).
  • All software drivers for the machine must be installed properly before joining the Institute as well as the software patches for the Operating system and Office must be installed.
  • The machine must be free of any virus or other harmful items.
  • Only genuine software licenses.

 

 

2. STUDENTS PURCHASE THE UNIVERSITY'S PACKAGE

In order for our students to benefit from the latest technology, the information below will be made available on our Web site only 8 weeks before the intake :

  • Latest technical specifications about machines compatible with the university’s IT environment. It should be mentioned that LRG does not offer any technical support for personal laptops but is ready to provide the students with counselling and a list of local suppliers.
  • A link to the IT supplier’s Web site to order computers selected by LRG.
  • The order and payment of the equipment must reach the supplier 5 weeks prior to the
    beginning of the semester to ensure the delivery of the laptop on time.
  • Late orders will cause delays in delivery and may, in some circumstances lead to additional charges.
  • Payment terms can be found on the supplier’s Website.
  • The fully configured laptops will be delivered to students upon arrival on the Campus.
  • Only this option includes full technical support by the university’s IT Support Staff.

PLEASE NOTE: LRG does NOT provide any software (Windows XP, Office, etc.)

 

 

BLUCHE CAMPUS

The following policy is applicable to students enrolled on the following programme:

  • BSc in Hospitality Management with a specialisation in Food, Beverage & Operations Management

 

Students will need to have individual access to our intranet website, which hosts student information, including support and teaching documents and other learning resources, and students will also require access to the internet which is vital for access to online library resources, email and project research.

A choice between two options is available to meet our requirements:

OPTION 1 – UNIVERSTITY’S LAPTOP PACKAGE
Students are strongly encouraged to purchase a package through the university. It comprises a latest model laptop, extended warranty and an enhanced support programme through the university IT team.

The school notebook computer will have at least the following specification:

  • Intel Core 2 Processor (or equiv.)
  • Internal 100MB/1GB Network Connection
  • 4GB Ram 160GB Hard Drive
  • 15.4 inch Screen(SXGA)
  • DVD/RW Multi-Burner
  • USB connections
  • Bluetooth, Wireless Lan
  • 3 Years warranty

In order to benefit from the latest choices and prices, the actual model is selected 2 months before the intake. It will be from one of the market leading brands: IBM/Lenovo, Acer, HP. Ordering instructions are published on the web site 2 months before the intake.


OPTION 2 – STUDENTS BRING THEIR OWN LAPTOP


2.1      Software Specification



Students may bring their own laptop but it MUST meet the university’s specifications as follows:

 

  • One version of the Windows Operating system must be installed (Only Genuine Software Licenses as accepted).
  • Windows XP Professional, or Home versions – IN ENGLISH ONLY.
  • Windows Vista Business, Ultimate, or Home versions – IN ENGLISH ONLY.
  • No Dual Boot – Only ONE Operating System.
  • Apple Mac machines can only be connected if they have a full Windows XP or Windows Vista operating system installed (Home, Pro, Business, Ultimate).
  • Microsoft Office 2007 – The IT training courses on Word, Excel, Power point, and Access etc, are based on the 2007 version of Microsoft Office. (Also important for ease of file sharing).
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer Version 6.0 or higher.
  • Anti-Virus software (The school will provide software for your use).


IMPORTANT: LRG does NOT provide any software (windows XP, Office,etc.)
It is to your benefit to bring your programme setup CDs and license numbers with you, including any CDs you received with your laptop, as these will be required if your machine needs to be re-installed. Failure to do so could lead to lengthy delays in the repair of the laptop.


2.2      Minimum Specification

If you choose to bring your own laptop it must have the following minimum specification:

  • Pentium 4 1.6GHZ, 2GB Ram, 40GB hard disk space available, WPA2 capable WiFi
  • Operating systems as listed above.

 

2.3      I.T. Support
It should be noted that LRG does not offer any hardware support for student’s laptops not purchased through the university. The responsibility of hardware maintenance, purchase of all Software, upgrades and support rests with the student. LRG can provide students with a list of local suppliers who offer these services.
